Mobile App Transition Plan

We have an updated announcement that you can read here.

So we’re taking the plunge and moving out of the app stores, and onto the mobile web. We’ve spent a lot of time trying to find the smoothest transition plan, but this is the first time (and last!) we’re doing something like this. So if there are bumps, we apologize, and want you to contact us with any problems, feedback@askmrrobot.com. We will be helping each and every person out that reaches out with a problem or concern.

The mobile web version will continue to be a premium feature, and we won’t have a free version. A free version would need to be ad-supported, but ads just don’t fit on mobile phones, and they often throw errors (and will continue to until the ad providers and servers get better). So, we’ve made the decision to continue to charge for the mobile web version. However, it’s included in the premium package, so you get a whole lot of goodies for $1 a month.

Why are we moving it out of the app stores? We have a thorough explanation here.

Already own the app? Mr. Robot has you covered! As a thank you for being an early app owner, Mr. Robot is making special user accounts, just for you. These special accounts will get you free access to the mobile web version and RoboCouncil all the way to Mists of Pandaria. Also, if you buy an annual subscription at any point up to Mists of Pandaria, you get $2 off the price. Update on 12/3 – we are sweetening the package, sine we love our early adopters! You now get the Mobile app and RoboCouncil free, forever. As well as half off the annual subscription if you sign up by Jan 31.

Our plan for the transition: please bear with us during this transition. We are trying to make this as smooth as possible, but if you experience any bumps along the way, just email us at feedback@askmrrobot.com. We are happy to help!

  1. Create your free account on when our new website launches and start your mobile web trial. We will launch the mobile web version of the app in early December, and your free trial is a temporary solution until step #2 is complete!
  2. Update the app when it hits the stores. We have submitted an updated app to the Apple store, but their approval process may take up to 2 weeks (this is the part out of our control, so you will get a free trial in step #1 until the update is approved by Apple). Android owners will be able to update right away (as soon as the mobile web version is live, in early December).
  3. Get the special code from your updated app, found on the launch screen. The update will contain a special code that you will apply to the user account you created (and if you haven’t created one, you can do so through a link in the app). The code will get you free access to the mobile web version and RoboCouncil until Mists of Pandaria  forever. The code also gives you $2 $6 off an annual subscription if you choose to upgrade for other cool features, at any point up to MoP.
  4. The update will remain in app stores until Dec. 31. So be sure update and use your code. After Dec. 31, we will remove the app from the stores, because we don’t want people buying an app that won’t be supported. Once it is removed from the store, you will not be able to get the update, so it is very important you update before Dec. 31 to get your code.
  5. If you have any questions or concerns, email us at feedback@askmrrobot.com. We will respond to every single email. You can also post comments here.

madretpally Let's look at a few things here, first, we purposefully made these posts before 4.3 so that new people don't buy the app only to find it not supported later on. You'll notice that on our website, we used to have an app promotion on the upper left part of the page, and as soon as 4.3 hit, we took that promo down. If we were greedy awful people, we would have promoted the hell out of the app since our traffic spikes with the patch. Instead, we're trying to MINIMIZE the number of people who pay for the app in the app stores right now, because we don't want people to download the app that we won't be supporting.

Here's another perspective: there are 3 of us who quit our jobs to make this website happen, and a fourth who's working on it part time. If we don't make enough money, we stop work on this site and go back to our day jobs. And then no one gets to use this tool. It's a trade off. We know that some people won't be interested in the premium features enough to pay for them, and that's totally fine, we will always keep the base tool free, you can hold us to that.

Take yesterday's patch as an example of what we can do for users, have you noticed that we're one of the only tools out there to support the new items on patch day? A lot of the other tools I use don't support them until days, weeks, and sometimes months later. We also support every single class and spec. It's not a coincidence that our tool is one of the highest quality and best supported tools out there... this is our JOB, whereas the other tools are built in people's spare time.

WoWhead also has items right away, they're pretty damn quick about that, but that is also being run as a company. They hired ad-sales people and put 5 ads on every page. We've decided to ask users to pay for a subscription for extra features so that we don't have to put 5 ads on the free pages. We just chose a different model, but in the end, both companies are here to make enough money to pay the bills.

Again, in case it isn't clear, we know a lot of people will just want to use the free site. And that's completely fine! And for those who want to subscribe, we won't be doing any tricks to get people's money (like asking for a credit card just to try a product for free), and we'll allow annual subscribers to choose to auto-renew or not. We will always be up front, which I hope came through from all of the posts we've made to make sure everyone understands.

madretpally Hey there it looks like the OP comment was deleted, but I wanted to provide an update, so I hope this reaches the OP. We are beefing up the offer to previous app owners! RoboCouncil and the mobile app will be free forever, and you'll also get a 50% discount on the subscription plan :) http://blog.askmrrobot.com/2011/11/mobile-app-transition-plan/

A tip for those of us that can't wait for the iPhone update:
Go to the web version, update your toon and others you'd like to view on the iPhone. Be sure to change the loot thresholds for T13. Now, reload your toon on the iPhone app and it will keep the web version options. No problems at all other than the missing options from the drop down menus.

Thank you Team Robot for this unbelievable service!

USMCMason You are welcome, and awesome tip!! I might have to tweet that out, do you have a twitter account I can give you credit on? Sorry about this last delay with Apple, it's one of the biggest reasons we're moving out of iTunes, these slow approval times are killer :(

Vee Tegen / Zoopercat Same as my post name, usmcmason. , however it doesn't appear to be working anymore for me on all of my toons. Example: I pull up my hunter Kiprusoff / Llane US, switch it to T13 and optimize. I then switch to my druid Khabibulin / Llane US, and do the same. Back to the hunter and it has reverted to T12. It looks like if you've got some T13 iLvl gear it will stay, because my DK Brodeur / Llane US doesn't revert. Unfortunately, when it goes back to T12, so does the iPhone app.

usmcmason I guess I put a period where it shouldn't have gone...

USMCMasonusmcmason. If you are switching characters, we cache some of the settings and reset others, so it makes sense it's changing on you :( Soon, once we have accounts, you can just login and load those up! Sorry for the hassle until then.

Coming from someone who is about to switch from a iOS phone to Android, and has a webOS tablet..... THANK YOU!

While I appreciate the access to the premium features this still leaves me somewhat dissatisfied. I understand that there must be some breaking point, but as someone who purchased the app within a matter of hours of it appearing in the Android Market I did not expect to only have the app for a limited time. I was surprised that the functionality was only $2, but not to the point that I thought I would only be able to use the app until the next major release. At the time I purchased, I would have likely paid at least $5 for it and thought that the price might increase as time went on. This switch to a subscription basis is understandable as many of the support sites and the entire MMO genre itself is heavily reliant on it. It just seems that as an early adopter there would be a little more than what's being offered. It's not even clear what difference the mobile version will be between the free and paid version or for that matter how long the initial free subscription will last as MoP still has no launch time. $2 off a 1 yr subscription offsets what I already paid, but the "Thank you" bonus time pre MoP for being an early adopter just feels a little hollow.

potatoboy Thanks for taking the time to fill is in on your thoughts.

I get that you would think the app would be supported for a long time, but in reality, we could have gone back to our day jobs right now, and not support it for 4.3, MoP or beyond. We would have already collected $2 from everyone and just said, "Adios, we're done." But, we've stuck around because we love what we do. We took a lot of time to figure out the best model, and moving to a subscription plan seems best.

It seems like you are generally OK with moving to a subscription plan, but think the early-adopter bonus should be higher. Our thoughts behind it go like this: we want to make sure we do something fair for app owners, and forcing them to convert to a subscription plan right away didn't seem right. So, we are giving you access to RoboCouncil and the mobile web version until MoP. We could have instead given owners $2 off, and asked them to convert right away. So instead of choosing which option to give mobile app owners, we decided to give them both! If you still don't think this is good enough, let us know what YOU would have liked to see. You never know what will happen, but we do listen to users.

As for the mobile web version, it seems like you were saying there is a free and paid version of the mobile web app, did I get that right? If so, that's incorrect. The mobile web version will always be paid. We decided to not make a free version because it would have to be ad supported, and ads on mobile devices just don't work... they take up too much space and often throw errors. If it seemed like there was a free version, that's our fault for not being more clear, and I will edit the posts to be more clear.

Vee Tegen / Zoopercatpotatoboy Thanks for the quick reply. I may not have read thourougly enough and assumed there would be a free version of the mobile site. I apologize. I've been through a few donorware to pay model changes before; Trillian (Twice!) and mIRC come tome mind; and I think you're close to the mark. My major concern is that it didn't feel like there was enough of a distinction between paid mobile users to free users. Now that you've clarified the mobile version a little more I feel a bit better. I'm not sure 100% if it came across in my first post, but the intent was not "Mr. Robot is screwing us!" but, "At least Mr. Robot isn't screwing us." What would make it more of a warm and fuzzy "Mr Robot loves us because we bought the app!" would be a slightly higher discount off the first year's subscription. Even going from $2 to $4-$5 off would go a really long way to make anyone that bought the app feel special.

potatoboy Mr. Robot likes warm and fuzzy, and it did come off as 'at least you aren't screwing us.' :) The "OMG MR ROBOT SUCKS" version would have been in all caps, haha.

We'll take your suggesting into consideration, and I really mean it! It isn't a blow-off comment, we'll get together and take a good look at it :)

Vee Tegen / Zoopercat 19 pts moderator

potatoboy Hey there, I wanted to follow up, since we made a few changes. It's always nice when someone posts a fair, honest view, that's well thought out and not inflammatory. It makes it easy for us to take it seriously :)

Anyway, we've decided to offer all features ala cart (in addition to the subscription option). Each feature will be about $2 each, so RoboCouncil will be $2, and the mobile app will be another $2, and so on. That will help people who only really want just one feature, whereas the subscription option is great for the hard core gamers that must have everything :)

Anyway, with the ala cart model, a user would get the mobile app for $2, forever. So of course it only makes sense to give current mobile app owners the same thing. So now you get the mobile app and RoboCouncil free forever. And in addition, we'll be offering a 50% discount for the annual subscription ($6 value). I hope that seems more 'Thank You for being an early adopter' worthy.
