How to spend your Bonus Rolls

We make features that we want to use ourselves - and I always found myself asking, "What bosses do I save my bonus rolls for?" This feature became an instant hit - apparently a lot of other people also wanted that question answered. Even a few Blizzard folks started using it back in MoP (and tweeting about it!) Bashiok_BonusRolls

What we calculate:

  • The percent of item drops that are upgrades for you, for each boss. For example, if a boss has 4 relevant items, but only 2 are upgrades,we take that into account (reflected in the "Boss Score").
  • The chance of getting a rare item: drops have a chance to be warforged, have a gem socket, and/or a minor stat. It's rare, but there is a chance and we factor that in to the "Boss Score."
  • The value of the biggest upgrade: maybe you don't care if you have a low chance of getting something, if it's the BEST something! So we also show you the score of the best item you can get (with options for you to include/exclude warforged and gem sockets).

Try it out!

Load your character on Ask Mr. Robot. You'll get to try out bonus rolls free for a week. We never ask for a credit card during the trial, because that's just shady trickery, and we don't do that! If you like it, you can upgrade for $2 a month, or $12 a year.

How to make a decision:

You have a few things to help you decide:

  • The chance you'll get an upgrade: Mr. Robot factors in the chances of upgrades, including the rare chance to get a warforged, socketed and/or minor stat item. This is all reflected in the Boss Score.
  • The average score of upgrades: some bosses will have 2 HUGE upgrades for you, and 2 very MINOR upgrades. Other bosses will have 4 PRETTY GOOD upgrades. Mr. Robot averages these together to help you decide with the Boss Score.
  • The biggest upgrade score: If you're looking for that HUGE upgrade, this might be the deciding factor for you. It might require a little restraint if the chance to win it is low, but that's what the mute button on your mic is for, amirite?!

Pictorial Guide:

Unfortunately, he can't hack the boss drops yet to guarantee you'll get something. But he CAN help you optimize the bonus rolls. Let's take a look at the information you can get in the "Find Upgrades" feature. BonusRolls_DropDownMenu Select the zone where you want to spend your Seals of Tempered Fate (bonus rolls). You can choose LFR, Normal, Heroic and Mythic. You can also choose some filters on the right. BonusRoll_MenuOptions

Review the information:

Zoopercat (the character in this example), has a gear score of 9,804. So an upgrade of 394 (highest item in normal mode, from Tectus), is about a 3% increase to her score. This helps put the scoring in perspective for each individual character.

LFR Anyone?

Will you get upgrades from LFR? Mr. Robot can tell you! You might not be spending bonus rolls there, but you can find out if upgrades are available. Go to the upgrade finder, and choose dungeons & raids in the drop down. You'll get a view like the one below. Zoopercat (the character in this example) has a gear score of 9,102. You can find that on your character page, under the gear list (down by the stats). So a score upgrade of +63 is 0.88%. That means the Warmage's LEgwraps that drop from Mar'gok are almost a 1% upgrade. That seems worth the 15 minutes it takes to run LFR, right? LFR

Best in Bags

And lastly, once you start winning a bunch of gear and you're trying to figure out which items are best. Mr. Robot is happy to help with his Best in Bags feature.

Thanks for the great post, this helps understand not only what the numbers mean, but how to use them to make decisions. Appreciated!

    • Hemming

And I’m going for Horridon every time in this scenario. I guess I’m a gambler and trinkets are always fun to get.

      • zoopercat

Glad you like it :) It’s fun to make tools that I know I would use, and find out that other people want them too :)

  • Patrick Lauer

Promoting premium only features of Askmrrobot, Mr Bashiok? do you get a share of that $12 a year?

    • Vincent Polite

Strangely, my reply-to got posted as a guest above. My comment @facebook-100000477555222:disqus and Bashiok was intended for here.

  • friendfriar

Looks like this tool was built with the assumption that you can’t win loot that is dropped from multiple bosses (like the Greatsword of Frozen Hells) via a bonus roll. Is this correct?

    • Vincent Polite

Not sure, friend friar – at one point I thought it was including those multi-boss drops in the list – at least it was for my rogue. I’m not sure what is available for my other classes that I could validate against, though.

      • J

Ummmm this Bonus loot roll is whack….one of our priest won’t Heroic WF BIS trinket for all CASTERS last week, and this week she used her coin and received a Heroic Version of the same item…Blizzards first needs to not give loot if that person already has it ON. its that hard for them to write a script to scan the person rolling to make sure he/she doesn’t have it. My poor priest has 2 of the same Chest and Bracers…i believe Blizz should give a refund if you use ur coin and get the same shit you already have!!! my point is if the boss is on farm in ur guild don’t WASTE ur coin.

        • Vincent

J, you might want to post this in an official Blizzard forum. There are all sorts of reasons why what you are suggesting won’t fly. But the AskMrRobot team has nothing to do with any of that. :)

That, and your comment has nothing to do with the thread.

        • zoopercat

That’s why we calculate your chances of winning an upgrade. For some bosses, you might only be able to use 1 of the 5 items that drop, so we reflect that in the % chance to win, hoping it helps people make a decision on what bosses to roll on.

  • Guest

@Patrick, I seriously don’t think Bashiok has a horse in this race except to promote a useful tool. For me, personally – it was a no brainer to use and pay for the premium features. There’s nothing else out there like this (that I’m aware of?). Sure you can cobble together the information yourself, and I am also willing to concede that some of the optimizations for speed create a disconnect between what the theorycrafters and other tools might say vs. what the robot recommends.

But what I have noticed since using the tool is that any issues with min/maxing are off by such a small amount that the upside completely trumps the downside.

The speed through which I can reforge, look for upgrades, and ask those questions like, “What should I spend my valor on?” or “What bosses should I use my bonus roll on” or the slightly convoluted but totally worth it feature, “What is the best set of items I can create from within my bags/bank?” all before that bonus roll timer expires…?

Yeah, the Robot overlord can have my $.50/month. No questions asked. My time is worth that and then some.

  • wowtipper

it’s obvious who you want to use your bonus roll on what boss. If a boss drops a weapon you want, use your bonus roll, if you want a tier item, use a bonus roll. But either way I can’t win crap with bonus roll not with regular roll so doesn’t matter. Just going there to collect my 29g per boss and paying 150g in repair bills from one wing in LFR

  • Oberon – TW Hellscream

I’ve been a great fan of the Mr. Robot tool ever since it came out. Although sometimes I like to try out my own reforging recipes, to tailor to my own play style. But Mr. Robot has always been spot on to direct me in the right direction.

However, as of late on the Asian servers (Taiwan) we have been getting higher item level gear for 25man raids. For instance 530 in Throne of Thunder, and 536(or535?) on lightning forged items. This has completely thrown off the usefulness of this terrific tool, and left us Asian servers back to large amount of trial and error. Is there anyway that you can improve on this? For instance of custom iLvL’s? or area to input the gear stats manually?

  • markshp

It is becomming too much premium nonsense

    • infr

oh relax, it’s one dollar a month. and even if your situation is such that you cannot afford it, you can still do all these calculations yourself using and use Mr. Robot’s free features.

So strange when people get bitter over a small free for an optional service after being provided (and continuing to be provided) with a free service.

      • RD20

Except for that whole pesky thing about not being supposed to charge for wow related content you know what carbonite got in trouble with.

  • Vincent Vasquez

I’ve been wondering, does using the older Elder Charms of Good Fortune affect the increasing chance in any way? Or are those and the Mogu Runes of Fate on their own tables?

    • zoopercat

Ah, good question. So they are on their own tables, but it’s more than that actually. Each bonus roll only affects that boss. So if you use a bonus roll on Horridon on week 1, you’ll get an increased chance on Horridon next week if you use another roll. If you use a roll on Horridon on week 1, and use it on the Council on week 2, you have no increased chance on the Council.

      Does that make sense?

      • Vincent Vasquez

Alright, so in that case, say I spend all my runes on one boss in one day by requeueing over and over. The chance would increase every time I spent a rune until I won something right?

I’m trying to pick up the ToT strength polearm. : /

        • Vincent

For what it’s worth, (even though this is an old thread), the answer to your question, Vincent (nice name) is yes. Hope you were able to either get that pole arm or find something new and shiny in SoO. :)

  • Shammy

Why isn’t there a paypal option to pay 1 usd a month?

    • zoopercat

Because of paypal’s fees, we don’t offer monthly plans through them, we’d have to charge too much for it to even make sense.

You can pay monthly using the credit card form on our site, which goes to Stripe (a payment company with several ex-paypal people involved). If you signup for the monthly plan there, it’s $2 a month. The reason it isn’t $1 a month is because we are charged per transaction, so 12 transactions instead of 1 in a calendar year adds up to a lot. So the annual people get a discount – we pass the savings on to them.

  • Josh

How bonus roll works : U got a ring defeating the boss, then u use a coin to get a bonus, then u gert another of the same ring… amazing….its blizzard inteligence

Next quarter they’ll be luck if only drop to 6 million subs….

  • Ken

Wow Patrick, you are a real prick. Its not good enough for you that you get a cool tool you can use for free, you want everything for free. I bet you don’t work for free.

    • Sarg

      I bet he doesn’t work.

  • Klod b

  • Sarg

If you can’t see the value this sight adds for a $1 a month you can’t have a job. This is a awesome sight to use with ur guild that allows you to give valid advice in seconds that in times past would have taken real valued game time away to help someone often with a much greater margin of error for pennies. I for one thank you for your efforts and the very low price for great service. If you don’t like it don’t use it. If you don’t pay you really lose a lot in my view to bitch about it.

  • Knut

Why do i get this error ? Error Message:
    Status: InternalServerError, Reason: Character unavailable

  • Slye Skye

For some reason Bonus rolls are including world bosses when I look at raids…Any suggestions?
