Mobile App: The NEW Tiny Experience!

Mr. Robot has been hard at work on his mobile app (again). This will be the 3rd iteration and it’s the BEST yet! He’s reworked the entire experience to be fun to use on tiny screens.

How do you get it?

It couldn’t be easier. Just browse to askmrrobot.com on your mobile browser and BAM. There you have it. You cannot find this in the mobile app stores like iTunes or Android. Distributing it directly cuts down on development time and removes any delay in releasing updates ;)

Also, make sure you are allowing cookies for our site on your mobile browser. Mr. Robot needs cookies to optimize (it’s his version of fuel).

It’s FREE!

Mr. Robot didn’t stop with just a redesign… he wanted to make it FREE! Many of you know that it used to cost $2. But with the launch of our new premium features this month, we made the decision that the mobile optimizer will be free. Did you buy the mobile app in the past? Not to worry – if you later upgrade to a full premium account, you’ll automatically get $2 off the price.

Login to sync your data!

If you login to the mobile app, you can sync your data. That means all of your saved profiles and other saved settings will be available in the mobile app. The premium features from the website will be added into the mobile app over the next couple of weeks. So you will also be able to use the Upgrade Finder, Shopping List ++ and Robocouncil.

Mobile App Info & FAQ

First, let’s start off with this factoid: The mobile app has not changed, it has just moved. Also, you DO NOT NEED to buy anything else! Once you complete the transition process by following instruction on your phone, you will get to access the app and RoboCouncil, just as before!

FAQ:

Q: I don’t like the address bar taking up real estate!
A: Neither do we, here’s a tutorial on how to remove the address bar for iPhones.

Q: Do I have to pay more money to get the app?
A: No. A BIG BEEFY ABSOLUTELY NOT NO! Once you complete the transition process, you own the app and RoboCouncil. YAY! Sorry for any confusion. Now, read the next question, it’s related.

Q: Did I pay for nothing? Does everyone else get the mobile app for free?
A: The mobile app is not free for anyone. Previous mobile users got their accounts transitioned. Anyone else who wants it still has to pay.

Q: If I already own the app and RoboCouncil, why would I upgrade to a premium account?
A: After you complete the mobile transition, you own the app and RoboCouncil and don’t have to make any more purchases. But, we have some cool features coming out that will cost additional cash, like the Gear Planner (slated for early 2012!), probably a cool MoP feature, and support for other games (SWTOR first, then LoL). If you want all of those, a premium account totally makes sense, plus, we remove all ads for premium account owners. Since you already owned the app, you get 50% off the premium account if you choose to upgrade.

Q: Is the mobile app just a mini website now? I am seeing the website like I see it from my computer, I don’t see a mobile form-factor anymore.
A: That might mean we aren’t detecting your phone. Try this: open the Mr. Robot on your mobile browser. At the top of the screen, do you see a big ‘switch to mobile’ link? If not, we are definitely not detecting your phone. Email us or post in our forums with the phone you own, and we’ll add it to the list for detection! feedback@(oursite).com

Q: The pick a character bar shows up in the middle of my screen (or some other weird layout).
A: It happens on some iPhones (see picture here), but we’re not sure why, and it isn’t consistent. While we track down the cause, you can fix it my rotating your phone to landscape mode, then back again.

Q: Why are you moving it?
A: For a lot of good reasons, the we elaborate on here.

Q: Why do I have to create an account and login?
A: Since the app is sold on the web, and not the app stores, we have to verify that the person owns the app.

Q: I am having trouble logging in via the app, what’s up?
A: There’s a few things you can try, preferably in this order.
1. Make sure you have ‘private browsing turned OFF’ – go to settings > safari > privacy.
2. Force quit your browser, then open it up. Type in http://www.askmrrobot.com. If you aren’t presented with the mobile screen, look for the big ‘switch to mobile’ option at the top of the navigation.
3. Try uninstalling the app (you don’t need to reinstall it anymore). Restart the phone.
4. Since the app is tied to your account now, and not your phone, try logging in on someone else’s phone, if that works, it points to a setting on your phone not cooperating, and we can help troubleshoot it some more.
5. If you manage to create an account but can’t get the mobile transition process to play nice, email us at feedback@(oursite.com) with your user name. We can help.

Q: I created an account but it doesn’t think I own the app, help?
A: Email us, feedback@(oursite).com with your user name and we’ll help. Until we get your account set up, please start the free trial of the app to tide you over :)

Q: I paid for an app, not a mobile website, can I get a refund?
A: The app is still an app, it’s just accessed differently. You use a web browser instead of an app launch icon, but the product is still the same. If the app doesn’t work on your phone and we can’t fix it, we can process a refund. However, this will lock out access for the mobile app, RoboCouncil’s mobile app, and RoboCouncil on the web (new!).

Q: The new mobile app is slow, I don’t like it!
A: We are working through it and it will be fixed! It’s very likely it has to do with the BiS cache. You see, we cache millions of BiS sets on our servers to make sure the site loads nice and fast. With this update, we had to blow away that cache, and so now those millions of sets are being re-cached. Hang in there, it’s a top priority.

Q: I’ve tried everything and the app transition just won’t work, what do I do?
A: Sorry about that. We can manually set up your account. We need a few things from you first.
1. Open the app and look for the email link we provide for reporting problems.
2. Click that link to send an email. Be sure to include the user name you used when you registered on our site (not the forums, that’s different). That email will automatically send us your app code, which we need to manually set up your account.
3. It might take us 48 hours to manually set up your account. So in the meantime, please start a free trial of the app to tide you over. Once your account is setup, you’ll have the app and RoboCouncil assign to your account :)

Premium Accounts

We have an updated announcement that you can read here.

Premium accounts are coming in December! First, Mr. Robot is launching a huge site redesign with new free features. Next, he’s launching premium accounts with super-charged features. Mr. Robot isn’t greedy, he just wants to keep making gaming tools as his day job, is that so bad? Us human minions working for Mr. Robot like to call this a “dream job.”

On that note, I’d like to take a minute to tell you about Team Robot. We started as 3 friends who’ve gamed together since college, and started this site in 2009 as a side project after we got home from our career-day-jobs. Then in November of last year, we decided to take the plunge, a hell of a lot of risk, and build a company out of supporting gamers. We’re dipping into our savings, big time, to get our company off the ground. And we’ve taken that monetary risk, passed up buying that over-priced but delicious bacon flavored chocolate bar, and cut back on Christmas gifts this year,  because we believe we can make tools worth paying for. We see every purchase come through, and appreciate every one of them! So thank you for the support already with app downloads!

What do I get with a premium account? On launch, the premium accounts will come with the mobile web app, RoboCouncil (on the web and mobile), and the new Shopping List feature. In early 2012 we have plans for a “Gear Upgrade Planner” for Warcraft and hopefully for SW:TOR.

We already have code started for League of Legends and SW:TOR, and will also be working on Diablo III. All of this is coming in 2012.

We only have 1 premium account level, which gets you access to every premium feature for every game we support. So if you play WoW, LoL and Diablo III, then you get to use all of the premium tools (in 2012)!

How much will premium accounts cost?
We have a subscription option and ala cart.

The annual payment option will charge you once a year, and you can choose to have it auto-renew or not. You can lock in the lower rate by signing up for an annual subscription at $12 a year, and that price will not go up next year. Although we have a smaller suite of premium features right now, we do offer you some cool stuff and remove ads for all premium accounts. If you sign up for the annual subscription, we get that money up front, which will help us hire a couple of fans to build more features for more games faster. So if you plan on paying one way or the other, we appreciate the annual subscription if you can afford the up-front cost.

Update on 12/3: We recently decided to offer each feature ala cart, and most premium features will cost $2 each. Read more here.

We are using Paypal to process the payments, but you don’t need a Paypal account. You can just enter your credit card in and go on your merry way. We need to use a verified and secure 3rd party vendor to process payments for us, because, well, they are secure and keep your credit card safe. None of your payment info will ever be hosted on our site or servers, even if you choose to auto-renew, it’s all handled by Paypal, and we can’t access it. That’s fine by us, since we take your information very seriously and want it to be handled by the security experts!

Mobile App Transition Plan

We have an updated announcement that you can read here.

So we’re taking the plunge and moving out of the app stores, and onto the mobile web. We’ve spent a lot of time trying to find the smoothest transition plan, but this is the first time (and last!) we’re doing something like this. So if there are bumps, we apologize, and want you to contact us with any problems, feedback@askmrrobot.com. We will be helping each and every person out that reaches out with a problem or concern.

The mobile web version will continue to be a premium feature, and we won’t have a free version. A free version would need to be ad-supported, but ads just don’t fit on mobile phones, and they often throw errors (and will continue to until the ad providers and servers get better). So, we’ve made the decision to continue to charge for the mobile web version. However, it’s included in the premium package, so you get a whole lot of goodies for $1 a month.

Why are we moving it out of the app stores? We have a thorough explanation here.

Already own the app? Mr. Robot has you covered! As a thank you for being an early app owner, Mr. Robot is making special user accounts, just for you. These special accounts will get you free access to the mobile web version and RoboCouncil all the way to Mists of Pandaria. Also, if you buy an annual subscription at any point up to Mists of Pandaria, you get $2 off the price. Update on 12/3 – we are sweetening the package, sine we love our early adopters! You now get the Mobile app and RoboCouncil free, forever. As well as half off the annual subscription if you sign up by Jan 31.

Our plan for the transition: please bear with us during this transition. We are trying to make this as smooth as possible, but if you experience any bumps along the way, just email us at feedback@askmrrobot.com. We are happy to help!

  1. Create your free account on when our new website launches and start your mobile web trial. We will launch the mobile web version of the app in early December, and your free trial is a temporary solution until step #2 is complete!
  2. Update the app when it hits the stores. We have submitted an updated app to the Apple store, but their approval process may take up to 2 weeks (this is the part out of our control, so you will get a free trial in step #1 until the update is approved by Apple). Android owners will be able to update right away (as soon as the mobile web version is live, in early December).
  3. Get the special code from your updated app, found on the launch screen. The update will contain a special code that you will apply to the user account you created (and if you haven’t created one, you can do so through a link in the app). The code will get you free access to the mobile web version and RoboCouncil until Mists of Pandaria  forever. The code also gives you $2 $6 off an annual subscription if you choose to upgrade for other cool features, at any point up to MoP.
  4. The update will remain in app stores until Dec. 31. So be sure update and use your code. After Dec. 31, we will remove the app from the stores, because we don’t want people buying an app that won’t be supported. Once it is removed from the store, you will not be able to get the update, so it is very important you update before Dec. 31 to get your code.
  5. If you have any questions or concerns, email us at feedback@askmrrobot.com. We will respond to every single email. You can also post comments here.

Mobile App Stores… And why we are leaving them.

In the very near future, Mr. Robot will no longer sell his app in iTunes and the Android markets. Instead, he’s moving it to be a web-based app… which in all honesty will look and act just like the app and you will barely notice a difference. You’ll just browse to it instead of launching it.

Why these changes?

Delays on the Apple Market: Apple takes 1-2 weeks to approve any changes we make to the app. That means every time there is a patch, like 4.3, iPhone and iPad users get information late. And that’s not cool, man.

Platform support: it doesn’t take a ton of work for us to port these apps over to the Apple and Android markets, but it does take some effort. And inevitably, users have problems with the app stores themselves, or technical difficulties from jailbreaking a phone or running uncommon OS’s, so we try to help them. But that means we have to become experts for every platform and OS… that time adds up. And we’d rather be spending our limited resources developing cool features, not porting & supporting the app on 4 different markets. We haven’t supported Windows phones or Blackberries yet because the demand isn’t high enough to dedicate time to it, and that royally sucks for people who own those phones. Mr. Robot doesn’t want to discriminate against those humans anymore, so moving the mobile functionality to the web will now support all platforms.

Money matters: Some of you have an Android phone and an iPad, which means you have to buy Mr. Robot’s app twice (he apologizes for that btw). Also, sometimes people do something nice for Mr. Robot and he wants to give them a free app, which he can’t do on the Android market right now, bummer. In addition to all of that, both Google and Apple take 30% of every app sale… sure $0.60 from a $2 app may not seem like much, but if we sold $10,000 worth of apps, that’s $3,333 we could have used to pay another developer to make cool features, so why let Apple or Google have that money?

Moving the app to the web also allows Mr. Robot to let you try features before you buy them (no credit card required). What a thoughtful robot.

How will the web-app work? Once it’s live, you will just browse to www.askmrrobot.com on your mobile device, and we will auto-detect that you are on a phone. We will show you the mobile friendly web-version which will look, and function, like the app does today. That version will require a premium subscription, which is only $1 a month (our low early-adopter price) or $12 annually.

What if I already bought the app? Mr. Robot has your covered! As a thank you for being an early app owner, Mr. Robot is making special user accounts, just for you. These special accounts will get you free access to the mobile web version and RoboCouncil all the way to Mists of Pandaria forever. Also, if you buy an annual subscription at any point up to Mists of Pandaria, you get $2  $6 off the price. Mr. Robot talks more about the transition plan here.

RoboCouncil – Mr. Robot is the Judge & Jury

Mr. Robot’s newest mobile app feature: RoboCouncil
Available on Android, iPhone

Have you ever had a raider roll on an item that was your BiS? Or maybe you raid with greedy people that roll on side grades and even down grades (gasp!). It’s even possible that you raid with the loot embellisher, who claims everything is a huge upgrade, when you suspect it isn’t. Or maybe your guild is nothing but sunshine and unicorns and you all want to give loot to the person who needs it the most. Well, RoboCouncil helps you solve ALL of these problems.

The idea behind RoboCouncil is to help raiders make informed decisions when rolling on loot (as well as spy on their fellow raiders). RoboCouncil will tell you the following:

  • Who the item is BiS for (a BiS indicator will light up on the main screen)
  • If the item makes or breaks a set bonus (an indicator will light up, 2T12, for example)
  • How much of an upgrade the item is for each person in the raid (shown with percentages on the main screen)
  • What alternative items are good for everyone else in the raid (click on any character, and an item list for the selected slot will load up for that character)

The image below is an example results screen. We picked 10 people in our raid, then selected the Funeral Pyre when it dropped. You see below that it’s a pretty big upgrade for Bryter, Aktapuss and Zoopercat, a minor upgrade for Dimonica and a slight downgrade for Mired. Borrogroth and the 4 other people below him are listed as N/A because it’s not an item they should be rolling on in the first place. We ended up giving the staff to Zoopercat, but had her hold onto it until we killed the next boss, which could drop an even better staff. When the next boss didn’t drop the upgrade, we had Zoopercat equip the Funeral Pyre.

We’d like to answer a few FAQs for you, which is possible with our mind-reading-robot-addon.

  • How will this handle set items? We will convert the set token into the appropriate items and compare everyone eligible on the list. We also take set bonuses into account.
  • Will I be able to swap characters in and out of my raid easily? Yes, we have a handy dandy delete button, and a big button to add characters. When adding new characters you can pick from recently used characters or search for new ones. We will also provide a total count, so you know if you forgot someone!
  • What if I don’t use the default stat weights? Right now, you can assign any of the pre-made sets of weights, but not your own custom set. If you think we need more custom stat weights to choose from, send us your weight set, with an explanation to feedback@askmrrobot.com, and we’ll take a look!!
  • Are there different ranking modes? Oh, wow, thanks for asking! Yes there are! We have 2 modes: Democrat (everyone is equal) and Republican (the rich get richer, or in this case, the geared get more geared). In the Democratic setting, it takes the item that dropped at looks at how big of an upgrade it is (in a percentage). In this scenario, severely undergeared players will always be ranked at the top of the list since high end items will be huge upgrades. The Republican setting does the opposite, it rewards players that are already geared incredibly well. The idea behind this is to not penalize players that have top-notch gear because giving an upgrade to a top DPSer results in more damage! If you have a raid of equally geared players, you will see very little difference between the 2 modes. So, what will it be.. Republican or Democrat!!?
  • Is it on the app only? We’re launching it on the mobile app first, and if it’s popular enough (which we think it will be), we’ll bring it on over to the website! We know a lot of people want an addon so Mr. Robot wrote a note on Facebook to explain why a mobile app is better!
  • When will it launch? It is live for Android and Apple users.
