Combat Infographics

BrackenSpore_IconWhen you look through combat logs, does it feel like a time-sinking, soul-draining scavenger hunt for a magical piece of data? Or maybe you fell asleep looking at the data and relied on your raid team’s ‘combat log guy‘ to sift through the data and fill you in.

And in the next raid, when your team wipes, what happens? Are people getting yelled at, blamed for messing up mechanics or not doing enough DPS/Healing?

Mr. Robot is here to give you a big hug and send rainbows shooting out of your computer screen. He wants to make post-combat information fun. He wants to give you the context you haven’t had before. He wants to help you kill more bosses.

Even several Blizzard people are excited for the tool 🙂

Check it out on one of my own logs! Click on any boss for the infographics. It will work on any logs uploaded Thursday night (Jan 29) or later 🙂

Is that mechanic really the cause of your raid wipes?

You know that mechanic you THINK you’re wiping on? Like that fire on Twin Ogron… and then people are called out, everyone feels bad, the mood deteriorates, and then the loot gods punish you with gold on your bonus rolls (they are all-knowing!). Do you REALLY know if that’s the cause of the wipes?

You will now! Mr. Robot’s infographics tell you how well other teams, who have killed the boss, did on each mechanic. (In our raids, it actually was a problem, and we scored bad on it)

OgronFire

Are you really taking too much avoidable damage?

Every team struggles with avoidable damage, and your healers would love you more if you took LESS damage (and less of their precious, precious mana). Their love has conditions, you know! But how do you know what’s an acceptable level of avoidable damage? Surely they don’t expect you to get to ZERO!

Mr. Robot’s infographics show you how much avoidable damage each raider took, and how that compares to teams who’ve killed the boss. This finds a nice baseline, and average, of acceptable avoidable damage for each encounter.

Avoidable_Mouseover

Are you killing adds fast enough?

You want to kill the Brackenspore adds fast, but what is… “fast” ?! It isn’t really defined, is it.
Until NOW!
Mr. Robot collects data from all successful kills and tells you what fast really is 🙂

Brack_Adds

Want even more data?

Each section has links to bring you to more data. And for those of you who LIKE digging through it (and don’t fall asleep like I do), we have all of the data you could ever want. Here’s a quick video tutorial on that data.

Upload your logs!

New to logging? We have a little guide on uploading logs to get you started.

  1. Get the desktop application here.
  2. Optional: If you want gear data tied to the logs (you should, silly), get the addon here.
You can check a box to auto-log raids if you want. No need to do ANYTHING else with the addon, other than have it installed.
  3. Upload your logs with the desktop application.
(Start an upload / Fight selection & gear data step)
  4. When you’re done, click the big button to view your logs, or just load your character on our site and the logs will show on the right side.

Impale scoring on Kargath seems to be bugged, at 100% it rates us with a 5.0 instead of a 10.

    • If all the logs uploaded have 100% so far, that would be the median, so technically everyone would have a 5.0. Probably have to wait for more data to see the scores even out.

    • Same happens with Brackenspore and Decay, when all decays were interrupted it scores 5.0, same with Creeping Moss. It’s hard to believe that there are no fails on these in all logs. 🙂

      • 5.0 is the median. It’s very possible that 50% or more of the people are interrupting all decays. We’ll update the code so that if this happens again, people are listed at 100% instead of 50% 😉

        Thanks for posting.

  2. Nice feature!
Unfortunately our full Highmaul H is not in list of processed logs. Is it possible to reupload it without loss of gear data?
So only Kargath and Ogrons are available 🙁 But insights for Kargath fight are useful. Is there info about players who was killed by cats?

  3. This is all really slick and helpful. Will this support Blackrock Foundry? I think the raiders that are intent enough on using this tool won’t be raiding Highmaul anymore.

    • It will be ready for BRF for sure! With one small catch: to make the comparisons, we need data first. So we’ll take all of tuesdays logs, crunch the numbers overnight, and have the infographics ready wednesday 🙂 It will retroactively generate infographics for logs uploaded tuesday as well.

We wanted to launch with Highmaul a few days early to work out any kinks 🙂

  4. Great feature! Our raid log seems to get an error (null reference to ID field) when loading infographics for Kargath and Tectus (Twins worked fine). http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/combatlog/9de6ed0f-2c3d-4d32-aa7d-9719e4c050af/boss/kargath-bladefist/mythic#f=57

  5. My guild uses another site for logging, but I’ve loaded a few of ours here as well. One thing that I’d like to see is an All Wipes (per log) filter. We can see All Attempts or Individual Attempts, but the ability to look at wipes collectively for review can be a handy tool as well. The kill attempt being included tends to obfuscate areas that need improvement until you start comparing multiple failures individually.

I can’t seem to get it to record anyfights

    • Using the addon is probably the best route. It requires the askmrrobot client to be able to upload. If you’re doing those things, double check you have it set to record fights. – Ivankov

    • Are you new to combat logging? If so, I can walk you through some stuff. Otherwise, can you tell me more about what’s going on? Is the combatlog.text file empty? Is the desktop client not recognizing any fights? Tell me as much as you can 🙂

  7. Can i Use this To supply Data to my Raiders or is it strictly solo player for now?

  8. Zoop, you (guys and gals) are doing a fantastic job with this – I’m pumped to parse through our data using your slick tools. Also excited for the lazy man’s “upgrade-o-matic” calculator that’ll tell me to bonus roll or not; my spreadsheets feel so outdated!

    • The bonus roll feature is live right now (it’s a premium feature, but everyone can try it free for a week. And no credit card is ever asked for). If you used up your free trial already, send me your username and i’ll reset it. feedback -at- askmrrobot dotz com

  9. will it work with two live uploaders simultaneously? i.e. if I’ll start live upload in warcraftlogs.com client and askmrrobot.com client at the same time

    • In theory, it should work for both live logging sites. The combat log is a text file and while warcraft is running, the file is read-only. That means, other programs can read it, and they can do so at the same time. I haven’t tried it myself though, but I don’t see a reason it wouldn’t work.

Also, in theory, our infographics should update with live logging. But we haven’t tested that (we will be monday night). If it acts a bit wonky, be sure to let me know 🙂

  10. Hello. This seems a very nice feature. Would it be possible to sync the logs directly with warcraftlogs? for future raid, it won’t be a problem to upload our logs on the 2 different website, however, uploading on only one and having a sync between the 2 site would be more user friendly somehow 🙂 And for past logs, I don’t have the raw data anymore, so it’s impossible to upload them here at askmrrobot, having a sync feature would allow us to check our performance on previous raid night.

Thanks in advance, and congrats for your work!

    • Noso, sorry you don’t have the past logs 🙁 But yeah, going forward, just upload to both sites. We probably won’t have a syncing feature, but it isn’t impossible. Each site processes data as it uploads, and we process it differently. So either one desktop app would have to manage it for both sites (that’s hard if you want something updated fast, but the other site is busy on other stuff). Another option would be to host the raw data, and let the other site grab it with an api, but then someone is stuck with the bandwidth and storage costs of all of that data.

So while it would be pretty slick, having people upload to both sites is likely going to be both easier, and more reliable 🙂

  11. Microsfot silverlight? really? I think I’ll pass

    • Yep! It’s a browser plugin, just like when you watch netflix 😉 It works on both PC and Mac. And it’s actually BETTER than if we wrote our own standalone client, because Silverlight takes care of supporting a bazillion different computer OS/Browser combos, something we can’t do very efficiently with only 1 developer.

It’s easy to install and takes less than a minute 🙂

      • Microsoft has already deprecated Silverlight. It has been dying for more than a year and it would have been best to have avoided it.

      • It also doesn’t work in Safari (Mac) as the ability to download/install from Silverlight is blocked. It ALSO doesn’t work in Chrome 12+ on Macs.

This seems like a great feature; but I had to go through 3 browsers just to get your install button to work. Crazy.

        • There are still people with Macs that use Safari?? LOL!

Strange that it did not work with Chrome though…

          • I am getting the same problem with Safari saying no way am I going to let you download this application. Tried Chrome, no go there either…followed the silverlight workaround instructions, still no go. sigh.

          • what’s happening when you try to install it? Does it install, but then ask you to keep installing?

        • No issues on Mac here.

          • What browser/OS version? Safari blocks the install for security (with no bypass). Chrome 12+ doesn’t support Silverlight properly. Firefox handled it just fine.

          • OS X 10.10.1 and Safari 8.0 (10600.1.25.1). Downloaded a Silverlight dmg when going to the upload logs section that requires it.

          • You’re using a different (outdated) version of Yosemite and Safari. I’m on 10.10.2 and 0.0.3 (10600.3.18). I wonder also if you have changed the defaults for App installation under System Preferences. The default is “Mac App Store and Identified Developers”

          • Yes, I haven’t been authorized to update yet and I don’t have a test mac to try it on for you at the moment (I work for Apple). I have in fact changed that option in System Preferences.

          • I’m guessing the system preference difference is key. The error Silverlight returned to me is that Safari blocked its ability to install software. I simply haven’t bothered changing the default setting since getting this system last month.

          • Yeah, that’d be my guess as well, it’s pretty restrictive when that’s turned on.

        • Feel free to stop complaining about it since they didn’t have to make it at all. =)

          • Yeah… informing a service that a product they are offering (Free or not) won’t install on default Mac setups is complaining. Then having an intelligent discussion with an Apple employee about a workaround well… that’s just sheer whining right?

            Go back under your bridge.

          • I admit that it is irritating that it won’t install with some of the default settings on Mac computers. I wish that I had a Mac to do some more testing and write some better tutorials for how to get it installed on any Mac setup.

I chose Silverlight because it is a great client-side technology for .NET developers. (C# is one of the most popular programming languages these days in general.) I’m kind of sad that it didn’t take off like it should have and is going away in the future. But we did check before releasing this client, it will be supported for many years and shouldn’t pose any problems on that front for our users. If it ever becomes a problem… we’ll just write a new client.

For Mac users – if you want to install in properly, you’ll need to edit your Safari security setting for http://www.askmrrobot.com and blog.askmrrobot.com. With the page open, go to your preferences tab, select Security, and then for website settings set both pages to run in Unsafe Mode. After that, your access won’t be denied. Not ideal, but certainly not the end of the world either.

    • It is hilarious that with all the great potential of this comparative analysis, you instead zeroed in on the underlying platform.

Honestly, the value is in the application. You’re not being asked to support it in a datacenter, you’re a USER here!

  12. MAN! can’t wait! if this program / site works as how it’s intended to ! this will change my game play dramatically. really looking good

  13. hey hey! pretty awesome!

Checking our logs I have uploaded the past weeks it’s very clear now what our problem is. Checking my own errors I see that my Rage Potions are not counted for pre-potting, but as an offtank who is not in charge of taking the first aggro, pre-potting Armor Potions is a bit useless. Don’t you think? Make pre-potting Rage Potions for Defense Warriors and Guardian Druids an option, please. 🙂

Also as a Tank or Healer using pots should be situational. When I know the raid or I take/s most damage at the last 20% I won’t waste my pot on the easy part. Is the tool checking if the Healer and Tank pots were used at a useful time? Just an idea!

Al in all it’s a big step forward to world of logs and enhanced the analysis of warcraftlogs 🙂

    • Glad it’s helping you!! That means so much to us.

As for potions, we don’t count pre-pots for tanks and healers. It’s also not counted ‘against’ you in the score if they don’t. As for potion usage during a fight, esp for healers, we considered it for a while. We decided to go ahead and assume healers should use one, even if it’s an int potion.

I’m a healer myself, and I do exactly what you described on most attempts. Sure, it will count against me a bit, but that’s ok. As long as we aren’t wiping because of healer mana, it’s ok 🙂

      • oh, one more thing, you can see when people used potions, it’s in the data view though (not infographic). Starting about half way into this video there’s a section where I go over graphing. You’ll see you can turn potions on at the bottom to find out when they were used. You can also graph it against healer mana. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ8zR62Ktoc

  14. Hey, so I think it is an AMAZING start, and was really looking forward to this feature, However, I think its lacking one thing that (is it wowlogs..or the other one) does really well. Where it has a list of each “mechanic” of the boss, and quickly shows the pass fail of each member on the page. So quickly looking, I can see the 3 people that always get hit by mines. Or very quickly see the 2 people who did not get out of the AoE zone kinda of thing. Its quick look, quick info. Here, I cant find a way to do that. I can only do 1 player at a time, and its just loaded with info (even if it is in info graph form) it almost feels a little to … Busy (I guess is the right word?)

I think this is a fantastic start, and can’t wait to give it a go in BRF, and hope to see some great improvements as it gets more use.

  15. Fantastic idea

  16. Can’t seem to get the install button to come up, Silverlight is up to date, but I just get a blank page.

  17. I can’t seem to stop drooling…

  18. Zoops as ever a g8 addin to AMR my only issue is its not comparable on my mobile phone although Silverlite won’t work on IPhones

    • You can still view everything on mobile just fine; the Silverlight is for the log uploads! I was showing a guildy his stats on my iPad just the other day =)

      • Sorry that’s what I was on about the logs on Silverlight it’s Microsoft software so Apple won’t touch it I still use AMR on my mobile for everything else though it’s a great tool and the Devs are nice helpful people to it wasn’t a dig it was purely an observation

  19. Zoop love the new tool keep up the good work!!! Krakkills!!!!!!

  20. I am having trouble with the addon. You say you can check a box to get it to autolog, but any time I try to open the addon to make any adjustments, I get a lua error. Any advice?

  21. Is there a way to macro the wipe functionality to a keybind?

  22. I feel like this is going to be used for evil rather then good…..

  23. This is really slick, especially for a single dev’s work. Format was a little tough to pick up at first (for example: The circles being more full means people took less damage, not everything is labeled as to whether something refers to the raid or the individual) but it only really took a few minutes to understand. This will be a very handy tool, especially for my guildies who are… rather less interested in the extreme detail of something like WarcraftLogs. Thanks!

I was curious: Approximately how many logs get uploaded here, and any idea how high-level the guilds are? Just hoping to see the level of comparisons being made.

    • The data for HM is light, since we only started collecting the data thursday. But I estimate about 10k logs a day, hopefully more soon. Seems to be representative of all sorts of gear levels (it’s a nice bell curve).

      • That’s a pretty good sampling then, thanks!

Oh! 1 feature request, unless it’s already there somewhere I didn’t notice: Especially since this is based around things like avoidable damage, I’d love to have the ability to say “ignore data after x number of people have died” to remove post wipe call skewing.

        • The AMR addon has a /amr wipe command (or something close to it!) that will do what you suggest.

Automatically marking an attempt as “wiped” could be interesting though – I believe that even if you /amrwipe an attempt, then get a kill, Mr. Robot is smart enough to figure out that ignoring the wipe is the right approach. So, even if Mr. Robot “correctly” assumes a fight is a wipe after, say 10 of your 20 members die at ~20%, then you get a kill anyway, everything would be recorded correctly.

          Interesting idea!

        • We do have it! (I’m actually working on a blog post so more ppl know about it). As long as the logger has our addon, they can use the wipe command. It’s on the combat log tab. OR you can macro it to /amr wipe. If the person logging has permissions to do a raid announcment (those red text announcement thingies), then it will annouce to the raid that the addon called a wipe.

          • Oh, and I should have also said: the wipe command ignores all damage and deaths after it’s called.

          • While that’s useful, I was really hoping for a website setting that can be used after the fact. Most nights, I need an automated addon to remember to start combat logging in the first place, so I can pretty much guarantee I’ll not remember to use the wipe command more than occasionally in combat :/

It does make sense in the setting where the whole raid uses the addon, and the addon is what’s used to call a wipe in the first place, though.

That said, even the website option wasn’t a thing for years (only started with WarcraftLogs, so far as I know), so I’ll happily enjoy the rest!

  24. Hello, I’d like to know if the desktop application is viable for mac-users ^^ sorry.

    • Yep! You’ll need to install silverlight, but that works on macs as well. If you run into any trouble, just let us know.

      • At this rate were thinking of changing ur name from zoopercat to Supercat. I’m sure you told me u were both taking a holiday but ur all working longer and harder hours BIG BIG THANK YOU GREAT JOB

  25. I really dont know if it’s accurate, here is the problem: when raid leader says WIPE… people on fire! Getting smash by charges, etc… the combat log gets this information but it shouldn’t be take on graphs… is this program can filter this kind of information? like don’t get the last people alive damage taken in consideration… sorry, bad english

    • I can chime in a bit on this!

First off, there is a command the person recording the fight (with the amr addon installed) can use, /amrwipe I believe, that will tell Mr. Robot that “the rest of this attempt is a wipe, ignore the bad firestanders, it’s on purpose”

Secondly, when comparing your data to the totals of everyone else, it is only compairing your data to everyone else’s *kills* – so wipes do not skew totals, unless your data has wipe data in it. Which, with a bit of work, is avoidable with the above command!

I need to get used to using this myself =)

    • We have a wipe command in the addon. A raid leader can type /amr wipe, any damage and deaths after that point isn’t counted 🙂

  26. That is really cool!

  27. Hey zooper,

I really like the application! The only improvement i can think of is the ability to look at other logs such as the top end raiders. For example on https://www.warcraftlogs.com/rankings/6/#class=Shaman&spec=Elemental

I usually filter it to look at other elemental shamans at my current ilvl range and see the dps being outputted at high skill cap. If i find that my dps is deviating by a considerable amount I usually go into the encounter and see the cast order of that player.

I may be missing something but I’m having difficulty extracting this kind of information. I could use some guidance if possible.

Overall I really like the layout this. It’s going to help identifying issues in our raid very easily. I’m hoping that this will replace wow progress as the go to logs all together… Good work!

  28. So, what do you think about this then:
    http://gyazo.com/efe7c0332c40543e8bb00e86191334ed
Pressing “Yes” or “No” doesn’t do anything. Pressing the “Install Silverlight” gives you an outdated installer, and it tells me I already got the newest version (which I do, even reinstalled it).

    Silverlight so good, Kappa

    • Looks like you have something blocking it from running. It could be a browser setting blocking it, some security setting.

Here’s an example that might fix it for IE:
      1. Open Internet Explorer

      2. Click Tools (Gear Icon)

      3. Click Manage Add-ons

      4. Look under “Show” where it says “Currently Loaded Add-ons” and change it to say “All Add-ons”

      5. Scroll down to “Microsoft Corporation” and find “Microsoft Silverlight” My installed version is 5.1.10411.0

      6. The status should say “Disabled” which is what has been causing the problem!

      7. Click Enable and then try to run your Lightswitch application and it should work.

  29. very cool. this will be very handy.

  30. Ok it says I have client installed but no desktop icon and I can’t find it – driving me insane! any help would be great

  31. hey zooper just a quick question does it support LFR? Currently we don’t have a raiding group but I still want myself and my guildmates to be able to improve.

    • We don’t have the infographics for LFR (we do have regular data views though). The problem is LFR groups tend to ignore most mechanics.

  32. I did install the latest version of Silverlight and i have latest version of Google chrome but when i press the upload, still says you have to download silverlight what am i doing wrong?

  33. Robert Deardorff

    February 4, 2015 at 7:52 am

Any chance this will eventually be able to pull directly from WarcraftLogs so we dont have to upload logs twice?

    • Nope sorry, each site records different data in different ways. Uploading to multiple sites is pretty quick though 🙂

  34. How can it differentiate between a wipes and actually fights?

    • Toward the top, there are some drop down menus. See where the boss name is listed? Under it, ‘all attempts’ ? Click the all attempts button and select the specific fight you want to see.

  35. I have been trying to use Combat Logs of 2 weeks and found that my combat log.txt file is empty. I see the text Addon logging when I enter raid and I click Save Character Data when we are done. What am I doing wrong?

    • When you’re raiding, does my minimap icon turn green?

Also, did you upload it yet to our site, or any other site? (Might sound silly, I know).

      • I will check to see if it turns green. I try to upload to your site and I get to the step about choosing the boss and it says there is no data. That is what led to me to looking at the file and seeing it is empty.

      • Yes, the robot turns green when I enter a raid.

        • ok, so next raid, when you try a boss, see if that file has data in it. I haven’t heard of logs NOT logging yet, but there is a first for everything.

      • Just finished Walled City. Ask Mr Robot icon is green. I click Save Character Data and then leave raid. I exit game. I open desktop app and click Upload log.Choose file log is wowcombatlog.txt. Hit Auto Detect and it returns there are no fights to report – go kill some bosses. If I use Get Info on file it is 2.2 GB in size. What am I doing wrong?

  36. Trying to upload gives me the following error:

  37. Great job!
Do you plan to support other languages (Russian particularly)?

  38. Zoopercat, just finished a raid with Nihilum and while i’m trying to upload the data, i’m getting the following error:

Is there a way to see health tonic / healthstone used?

  43. Are the info graphics turned off by default for LFR? I uploaded a combat log from an LFR I completed today, which shows the combat log but not the info graphics portion. Is there a setting to turn these on? Does the program automatically generate info graphics once a log is uploaded? What am I doing wrong?

  44. When I try to use the combat log uploader on Chrome Version 42.0.2292.0 dev-m and Silverlight Version: 5.1.30514.0, it keeps asking me to install Silverlight, Any ideas?

  45. silverlight is exactly the reason I dislike netflix.

  46. zooper, you’re so cute. lets go on a date? 😀

  47. I am having issues security after downloading this. I have changed all of Activex settings to allow this program, but I am still blocked. I have changed multiple browser security settings and tried downloading the application from different browsers, but none of it works and I am still blocked by Activex controls. Are there any work arounds to this?

  48. Heelp me. Often when i upload logs, there is ALWAYS one of the fights where the infographics don’t work/show on. Tonight it was the maidens in BRF. What am i doing wrong? 🙁

  49. Hey Zooper! really loving this. My favourite feature is the dps rank for spec and item level. Also… are we able to see the talents the top 95% of dps pick for each fight yet, or not yet?
if no, how long would you estimate until we can?

  50. My guild has been using warcraftlogs.com but this is way more easy to digest. Also it looks like you update this regularly (awesome) and the last post from warcraftlogs was last year. Keep up the good work zoopercat! 🙂

  51. Hey so I’m a bit confused on how to view my live logs during raid. I got the desktop application and the in-game addon and I hit the “Start a Live Log” button in the client but I don’t know where to go to view the data/infographics between pulls.

  52. When trying to upload logs, it bring me to downloading microsoft silver, once i download it, the installer says i have the most current version. Bit of a wall of text inc…

First off, I’m really surprised to see that Silverlight doesn’t even work with Microsoft’s new browser, Edge. I figured it wouldn’t play nice with Chrome, so I used Edge, but even after I installed Silverlight, it keeps asking me to install it when I click on ‘Upload Logs’, so I finally used Firefox.

Also, I’m kinda confused b/c I had the AMR client a while back, but then it was gone, but then the in-game addon tells me to upload my combat log I need to run the client after I exit the game so I look for the client, and read on a AMR blog that the client went the way of the Dodo and we’re using the new copy/paste method, but then I find the client and install it (/shrug) Once I got the client, things got a lot easier.

When uploading the logs, I was asked if I wanted to make it public or private, and even though I understand the benefit of making it public, it’s only LFR and I’m just wanting to get a feel for how the logs work and what information I can glean from them, so I choose ‘private’. But now I’m having problems getting my logs to show up on my character screen in AMR.

When I load my character, it shows my gear on the left and on the right, it says “You have no logs!”. When I launch the AMR client and try to upload them again, it just says I have already uploaded my logs.

    • When you look at the AMR client, does it show you as logged in? If you are not logged in when uploading, you’ll need the link to access the private log.

You can also see if it shows up in another spot. On the website, hover over the drop down menu at the very top left of the site (it’s gray). Choose ‘combat logs.’ On that page, choose ‘my logs’ to the far right. See if it is there (it should be as long as you were logged in to the client when the logs were uploaded).

      • Yeah, when I click the settings cog on the client, it brings up another window that shows me logged in. It said I had logs to upload, so I uploaded them and made them public. These new logs show up on my character screen on the AMR website like I had seen in Zoopercat’s video. I can’t find the private ones I had previously uploaded.

I’m just worried players will see these horrendous results and judge my future performance on past results when this tool is really meant to help players identify areas they are struggling in and improve, and not to weed out “bads”.
